“Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and lean of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light”
Karunyatheeram is a shelter and safe haven for the abandoned teens, adolescents and destitute senior women citizens.
” Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and lean of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light ” (Matthew 11:28-3)
Inspired by this Bible verse, Karunyatheeram Balbhavan was founded by a bunch of like minded, philanthropists under the leadership of Sr.Teresa Puthuparambil and under the patronage of the Bishop and Clergy of the Diocese of Quilon as a non-profit charitable trust registered under 232/2001 section 41(1) of the Juvenile Justice (care and protection of children) Act,2015 of the Government of Kerala on 5/8/2001.
This umbrella organization has embraced as its motto, the avowed mission to take care of orphans and destitute women, the rehabilitation of destitute children,by preparing them with ample education and training in skills like sewing, nursing, teaching….. etc.. thereby making them employable, self reliant and induce sort of self confidence and will power to stand on their own legs and soar high.
In deserving cases, The Trust undertake to marry off girls under its care once they reach their adulthood, picking suitable bridegrooms, giving enough ornaments and seed fund to start their new lives together. The Trust do keep track of the married off ‘daughters’ after they start their new vocation. Statistics show all of them, without exception, lead peaceful and harmonious marital life. All of them do keep their liaison with their ‘Mummy’, Sr.Teresa the managing trustee and periodically come to visit her, to reciprocate their love and affection for her.
Karunya theeram, since at its inception is administered and guided by the Karunya theeram Trust constituted for the purpose started its infancy in an old family house in Eravipuram, a family household handed over to the Trust on a subsidized price by its owners- an aged couple- Mrs. and Mrs and Mr.Michael, natives of Eravipuram, The Institution started with 1 Boy and 2 girls in their teens in the limited facilities of the house, which later was renovated and expanded by adding possible extensions to the main building. Later when the number of inmates swelled into considerable number the boys and girls were segregated to different locales, with the boys being housed in a new building just across the road in front of the Balbhavan. Later the Trust decided to stop the intake of boys and admitted only the girls.

- Balbhavan – 50 inmates
- Old age home – 16 inmates
By the Grace of God, the Balbhavan inmates and the inmates of the old age home for the senior lady citizens had over come the 2018 flood and the 2019-21 covid pandemic without any unpleasant incidents or fatalities.
It is our sincere and prayerful hope and ardent belief that the Trust and the charitable institutions under it will flourish and tide over its financial crunch emanated from the Covid19 pandemic, and will be able to serve the society, by emancipation of the adolescent and teens especially of the marginalized sect inhabiting mainly the coastal belt, giving them a safe and secure social life by giving them proper education and training to mold them to employable, self reliant and above all good citizens of our country that uphold virtues and principles that could be emulated by the world over.
